『ムカデ人間（The Human Centipede）』は、オランダ出身の監督トム・シックスによるボディホラー映画シリーズです。第1作『The Human Centipede (First Sequence)』は2009年に公開されたオランダ製のインディーズ映画で、「3人の人間を手術でつなぎ合わせてムカデのような生物を作る」という、あまりにも異様な発想で注目を集めました。

◆ 第1作：The Human Centipede (First Sequence)
ドイツを旅行中のアメリカ人女性2人が、車の故障で森の中で立ち往生し、助けを求めてさまよった末に、ある一軒家にたどり着きます。そこに住んでいたのは、かつて双子の分離手術で名を馳せた外科医・ハイター博士。
しかし、彼は既に常軌を逸しており、「人間を連結させて1つの“生物”にする」という妄想に取りつかれています。女性たちは薬で眠らされ、日本人男性の旅行者とともに監禁され、「3人を手術でつなぎ合わせる」という狂気の実験 の対象となってしまいます。作品は、逃げ場のない状況の中で、3人がどう抗い、どんな結末に向かうのかを描いていきます。
直接的な描写は意外と少なめで、「設定そのものの気持ち悪さ」と、博士の冷徹さがじわじわと恐怖を増幅させる作りになっています。

◆ 第2作：The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence)
第2作は一気にメタ構造 になります。舞台はイギリス・ロンドン近郊。どこにでもいそうな冴えない男・マーティンは、前作『ムカデ人間』のDVDに取りつかれた屈折したファン。
彼は、映画の中の実験を「現実でもやってみたい」と考え始め、粗暴で非医療的な手段を使って人を集め、より大人数の“ムカデ”を作ろうとする …というのが基本線です。
モノクロ映像で描かれ、1作目よりもはるかに過激で、ショッキングな表現が多く、世界各国で上映禁止・再編集などの騒動を巻き起こしました。

◆ 第3作：The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)
完結編となる第3作は、アメリカ南部の架空の刑務所が舞台。暴力と反乱が絶えない「ワースト刑務所」の所長・ビルは、囚人たちを抑え込む「究極の抑止力」を求めています。
そこで彼は、部下から『ムカデ人間』シリーズの映画を“現実の刑務所運営”に応用するという、常識外れの提案を受けます。やがて、膨大な数の囚人を使った前代未聞の計画が動き出し、シリーズのコンセプトが「国家レベルの悪趣味なプロジェクト」として暴走していきます。
第3作は、ショックホラーに加えて、アメリカの懲罰主義や刑務所ビジネスを皮肉るようなブラックコメディ的な要素も強い作品になっています。

◆ 過激ホラー＆カルト映画が好きな人
「映画史に残る問題作」「一度聞いたら忘れられない設定」といった作品が好きな人には、まさにうってつけです。物語としての完成度よりも、「コンセプトそのものの狂気」を体験するタイプの映画なので、カルト映画・悪趣味ホラーを“履修”しておきたい人には強く刺さります。
